Providing Security Across An Ageing Population

The proportion of older people in society is growing faster than any other area of the population. With this growth comes increased security requirements.

Security consultants responding to the needs of older people should consider the following when providing advice:

How best can a security strategy be best adapted for an ageing community;

Older persons generally have specific fears and concerns that a different to a younger demographic;

  • Older persons have unique characteristics and therefore needs based upon their ethnicity, transportation, living arrangements and general life experience;
  • Older persons often have less family support due to the death of a spouse, family members, or friends; and
  • Typically older persons have less knowledge about modern technology and how systems are used.  This means provision of written guidance is essential.
