People Management in Security Risk Minimisation

It is argued all crime related security incidents originate from human sources of threat. This means effective security risk management must strongly focus on people.

Security leaders need to understand the importance of developing and operationalising security protocols to manage people by:

  • identifying security and non-security personnel;
  • the exposure of the organisation versus knowledge of individuals;
  • awareness of individuals to critical infrastructure and intellectual property;
  • existing safeguards and those that should be proposed; and
  • methods for ensuring any breaches are detected in the early stages.

The above approach should be supported by an organisational security awareness program where individuals are encouraged to accept their roles and responsibilities as part of the organisations protective security strategy.
